Mel Baughman: "National Geographic" Field Guide to BIrds : Florida

Description

This series of pocket-size bird field guides launches with titles for America's two most popular birding hotspots: California and Florida. The ultimate migration ground that draws birds from around the world. The books are designed for use by novices to experienced birders who want to take only the guide for the state or region they're visiting. Each guide will be 256 pages and will feature about 125 birds. Their handy trim and can easily fit in a backpack or pocket for easy access. Rather than alphabetically, the birds are featured by family, as supported by the American Ornithological Association. A quick reference alphabetical guide on the inside of the back cover lets you find a name quickly. Once you've spotted the bird and need to identify it quickly, the clean, straightforward layout makes it a snap. Each entry has a vivid photograph on the left page showing the bird in its habitat. On the right page is a list of bulleted points called field identification clues to confirm at a glance the bird's identity, including size, color, beak and wing shape, markings, song, flight pattern, habitat, and hotspots in which to find them. A special field fact at the bottom of each entry gives an additional highlight to look for in the bird's behavior. In selected cases, artwork will illustrate the field fact or introduce a relative of the featured bird. A full index with life list, as well as a quick-reference field index on the back inside cover put users on the track to lifelong birding.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni: Sister of My Heart

Sister of My Heart

Description

From the award-winning author of Mistress of Spices, the bestselling novel about the extraordinary bond between two women, and the family secrets and romantic jealousies that threaten to tear them apart. Anju is the daughter of an upper-caste Calcutta family of distinction. Her cousin Sudha is the daughter of the black sheep of that same family. Sudha is startlingly beautiful; Anju is not. Despite those differences, since the day on which the two girls were born, the same day their fathers died--mysteriously and violently--Sudha and Anju have been sisters of the heart. Bonded in ways even their mothers cannot comprehend, the two girls grow into womanhood as if their fates as well as their hearts were merged. But, when Sudha learns a dark family secret, that connection is shattered. For the first time in their lives, the girls know what it is to feel suspicion and distrust. Urged into arranged marriages, Sudha and Anju's lives take opposite turns. Sudha becomes the dutiful daughter-in-law of a rigid small-town household. Anju goes to America with her new husband and learns to live her own life of secrets. When tragedy strikes each of them, however, they discover that despite distance and marriage, they have only each other to turn to. Set in the two worlds of San Francisco and India, this exceptionally moving novel tells a story at once familiar and exotic, seducing readers from the first page with the lush prose we have come to expect from Divakaruni.Sister of My Heart is a novel destined to become as widely beloved as it is acclaimed.

"Contempt" is a brilliant and unsettling work by one of the revolutionary masters of modern European literature. All the qualities for which Alberto Moravia is justly famous his cool clarity of expression, his exacting attention to psychological complexity and social pretension, his still-striking openness about sex are evident in this story of a failing marriage. "Contempt" (which was to inspire Jean-Luc Godard's no-less-celebrated film) is an unflinching examination of desperation and self-deception in the The Five Masks of Dr. Screem free epub emotional vacuum of modern consumer society." Perhaps the foremost authority on the psychological interpretation of fairy tales is Marie-Louise von Franz. In this book--originally published as "An Introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales "--she describes the steps involved in analyzing and illustrates them with a variety of European tales, from "Beauty and the Beast" to "The Robber Bridegroom."

The Taming of the Shrew

Description

Love and marriage are the concerns of Shakespeare s "The Taming of the Shrew." Lucentio s marriage to Bianca is prompted by his idealized love of an apparently ideal woman. Petruchio s wooing of Katherine, however, is free of idealism. Petruchio takes money from Bianca s suitors to woo her, since Katherine must marry before her sister by her father s decree; he also arranges the dowry with her father. Petruchio is then ready to marry Katherine, even against her will. Katherine, the shrew of the play s title, certainly acts much changed. But have she and Petruchio learned to love each other? Or is the marriage based on terror and deception? The authoritative edition of "The Taming of the Shrew" from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes: -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Newly revised explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play s famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare s language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library s vast holdings of rare books -An up-to-date annotated guide to further reading Essay by Karen Newman The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world s largest collection of Shakespeare s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the Folger offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu."

Zoo Animal Friends: 10 Tiny Cuties with Mix and Match Accessories

Description

Michele, a knit designer for over 25 years, loved designing this book of zoo animals, coming up with the animal ideas and giving them each their own personality. Everyone in her family has a different favorite. She likes the monkey the best and her husband likes the lion. The grandchildren, of course, want them all! The most fun was in the creating of the clothing and accessories as everything is mix and match. You could easily just make one or two of the animals and then all of the projects to go along with them. All animals begin with the same basic shape All projects are made using the same yarn - no need to buy a full skein of yarn that will only be used for a few stitches All of the accessories fit each of the animals so you can make just one or two critters and a complete wardrobe for them

Witchcraft: A Very Short Introduction download pdf

Malcolm Gaskill: Witchcraft: A Very Short Introduction

Witchcraft: A Very Short Introduction

Description

Witchcraft is a subject that fascinates us all, and everyone knows what a witch is - or do they? From childhood most of us develop a sense of the mysterious, malign person, usually an old woman. Historically, too, we recognize witch-hunting as a feature of pre-modern societies. But why do witches still feature so heavily in our cultures and consciousness? From Halloween to superstitions, and literary references such as Faust and even Harry Potter, witches still feature heavily in our society. In this Very Short Introduction Malcolm Gaskill challenges all of this, and argues that what we think we know is, in fact, wrong. Taking a historical perspective from the ancient world to contemporary paganism, Gaskill reveals how witchcraft has meant different things to different people and that in every age it has raised questions about the distinction between fantasy and reality, faith and proof. Telling stories, delving into court records, and challenging myths, Gaskill examines the witch-hunts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and explores the reinvention of witchcraft - as history, religion, fiction, and metaphor. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Celebrated by The Times as one of the 50 Greatest Crime Writers, Donna Leon brings Witchcraft: A Very Short Introduction free pdf Venice to life in the twenty-second Brunetti novel of this bestselling series, where our detective must uncover the mystery. When making routine enquiries into a possible bribery case that could embarrass the mayor - a humiliation Vice-Questore Patta is very keen to avoid - Commissario Brunetti receives a call from his wife, Paola, who is evidently very upset. The middle-aged deaf mute with the mental age of a child who helped out at the Brunetti's dry cleaners has been found dead - an 'accidental' overdose of his mother's sleeping pills - and Paola is distraught by the news. To the neighbourhood he was just the 'boy' who helped out, but nobody knew much about him - not even his name. That a soul could have lived such a joyless life is too much for Paola to bear, and she asks Guido if he can find out what happened. It is a surprise to Brunetti just how little was known about this man-child - there are no official records to show he even existed.

Dave Thomas,Andy Hunt,Chad Fowler: Programming Ruby 1.9 & 2.0: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide

Programming Ruby 1.9 & 2.0: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide

Description

Ruby is the fastest growing and most exciting dynamic language out there. If you need to get working programs delivered fast, you should add Ruby to your toolbox. This book is the only complete reference for both Ruby 1.9 and Ruby 2.0, the very latest version of Ruby. 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the Ruby language. We're proud that throughout its history, we've continued to cover the latest version of Ruby. Would you like to go from first idea to working code much, much faster? Do you currently spend more time satisfying the compiler instead of your clients or end users? Are you frustrated with demanding languages that seem to get in your way, instead of getting the work done? Are you using Rails, and want to dig deeper into the underlying Ruby language? If so, then we've got a language and book for you! Ruby is a fully object-oriented language, much like the classic object-oriented language, Smalltalk. Like Smalltalk, it is dynamically typed (as opposed to Java or C++), but unlike Smalltalk, Ruby features the same conveniences found in modern scripting languages such as Perl and Python. The combination of the power of a pure object-oriented language with the convenience of a scripting language makes Ruby a favorite tool of intelligent, forward-thinking programmers. The Pickaxe contains four major sections: * An acclaimed tutorial on using Ruby. * The definitive reference to the language. * Complete documentation of all built-in classes, modules, and methods. * Complete descriptions of all 97 standard libraries. This is the reference manual for Ruby, including a description of all the standard library modules, a complete reference to all built-in classes and modules (including all the new and changed methods introduced by Ruby 1.9, 1.9.2, 1.9.3, and 2.0). It also includes all the new and changed syntax and semantics introduced since Ruby 1.8. Learn about the new parameter passing rules, local variable scoping in blocks, fibers, and the new block declaration syntax, among other exciting new features. About Ruby 2.0 Ruby 2.0 is a minor update to Ruby 1.9, unlike the more major updates from Ruby 1.8 to Ruby 1.9. The major language changes in Ruby 2.0 are the addition of keyword arguments and the change to use UTF-8 as the default source file encoding. There are a number of additions to the standard library, including: * @Enumerator::Lazy@, which adds support for lazy access to potentially infinite lists. * Refinements allow you to encapsulate changes to third-party classes, and scope their application to individual source files, preventing your changes from polluting the global application. You'll also find that Ruby 2 is faster, and has memory management improvements that make it more server-friendly. All told, there are over 110 sections of the book that have been flagged and cross-linked to indicate 2.0 content. What You Need * This book assumes you have a basic understanding of object-oriented programming. * In general, Ruby programmers tend to favor the the command line for running their code, and they tend to use text editors rather than IDEs.

Perfect for toddlers having a meltdown, or anyone in a plain old bad ""Little is known for certain about B. Traven. Evidence suggests that he was born Otto Feige in Schlewsig-Holstein and that he escaped a death sentence for his involvement with the anarchist underground in Bavaria. Traven spent most of his adult life in Mexico, where, under various names, he wrote several bestsellers and was an outspoken defender of the rights of Mexico's indigenous people. First published in 1935, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre "is Traven's most famous and enduring work, the dark, savagely ironic, and riveting story of three down-and-out Americans hunting for gold in Sonora."

Martin Heidegger: Basic Writings

Basic Writings

Description

Basic Writings is the finest single-volume anthology of the work of Martin Heidegger, widely considered one of the most important modern philosophers. Its selections offer a full range of the influential author's writings including "The Origin of the Work of Art," the introduction to Being and Time, "What Is Metaphysics?," "Letter on Humanism," "The Question Concerning Technology," "The Way to Language," and "The End of Philosophy." Featuring a foreword by Heidegger scholar Taylor Carman, this essential collection provides readers with a concise introduction to the groundbreaking philosophy of this brilliant and essential thinker."

Any parent of a young child knows that the best way to distract a child from his bad temper is to re-direct his attention to something humorous. Lichtenheld demonstrates just how this works in a series of double-spread cartoons depicting a variety of situations that might cause a rotten mood. The big, bold and broadly comic style is well-suited to the tone of the text and has solid child appeal. A concubine is strangled in the Sultan's palace harem, and a young cadet is found butchered in the streets of Istanbul. Delving deep into the city's crooked alleyways, and deeper still into its tumultuous past, the eunuch Yashim discovers that some people will go to any lengths to preserve the traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Brilliantly evoking Istanbul in the 1830s, "The Janissary Tree" Basic Writings free download pdf is a bloody, witty and fast-paced literary thriller with a spectacular cast.

Natural History Drawings: The Complete William Farquhar Collection Malav Peninusla 1803-1818

Description

This is a wonderfully illustrated and evocative look at the natural history of the Malay Peninsula. Now for the first time, all 477 drawings of the flora and fauna of the Malay Peninsula commissioned by Colonel William Farquhar during his time as British Resident and Commandant of Malacca from 1803 to 1818, are published in one volume. Covering a wide spectrum of species, the evocative paintings were rendered in brilliant watercolour by Chinese artists who employed both Chinese and Western painting techniques. In an era when photography was non-existent, the only means of recording nature and wildlife was through painting. Accompanied by authoritative essays and detailed captions, "Natural History Drawings" is a fascinating window both into the natural history of the time and the 19th-century British settlement in the Malay Peninsula.
